# Thermal infrared inspection

> Thermal infrared is a supplemental inspection tool, not a required part of TREC’s minimum Standards of Practice. Temperature patterns can suggest areas for closer review but do not prove moisture, leaks, or defects without further evaluation.

Infrared can help identify temperature patterns for further review when conditions allow.

## What infrared can show

A thermal camera displays surface temperature differences. When conditions are suitable, those patterns can help identify an area that may deserve closer visual review or specialist evaluation.

## What infrared cannot prove

An infrared image does not see through walls, identify a material with certainty, or diagnose the cause of a temperature difference. Sunlight, airflow, insulation, moisture, and other conditions can affect the image. Any concern needs context and, when appropriate, further evaluation.

## How it fits a home inspection

TREC’s minimum Standards of Practice do not require thermal imaging equipment. If infrared is used, treat it as an additional observation alongside the visual inspection and report, not a stand-alone result.
